  The entire thickness of ThinCRT is only 8mm, developed by Candescent Technology in the United States, and its working principle is similar to CRT. However, it does not use the usual CRT electron gun, deflection coil sleeve, and shadow mask, but instead uses a conical cold cathode emitter called Spindt as the electron emission source. The cold cathode electrons form an electron beam through a perforated conductive plate and emit light when they collide with the anode plate coated with a fluorescent layer.

  The ThinCRT tube consists of two glass plates with a gap of only 1mm in the middle. The support inside the display is made of a proprietary 0.05mm ceramic thin wall, which is sufficient to withstand external atmospheric pressure. The anode panel is an aluminum plated colored fluorescent layer similar to the usual CRT. Replacing a single large cathode of CRT is the formation of millions of microelectronic emitters on the substrate. Because the microelectronic emitters are very small, each one is only 200 nm, and several microelectronic emitters activate a pixel on the display screen, allowing a 20% Failure rate, which is much better than LCD.

  In addition, the cold cathode electrons of ThinCRT are generated at room temperature and do not require heating. The power loss is only a small part of the typical hot cathode CRT, making it a highly efficient display. Additionally, it does not require a shadow mask (which wastes 80% of power), further enhancing its effectiveness.

  Candesent claims that ThinCRT can almost use 80% of the tools, equipment, and processes in existing CRT, LCD, and semiconductor manufacturing industries, greatly reducing the cost of equipment production lines. In late 1998, the company collaborated with Sony to launch a 14.1-inch ThinCRT display.

  The advantages of ThinCRT are ultra-light and ultra-thin, low power loss, infinite viewing angle, no deterioration of color and contrast, response speed that can meet the requirements of full motion video images, and wide brightness range, suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
