The working principle of FED (Field Emission Display) is similar to CRT, where electrons escape from the cathode and accelerate into the red, green, and blue fluorescent layers in front of the pixel unit, and then energy is converted into light. The electrons in a FED are generated by the voltage difference between the cathode tip and its gate, known as field emission.
In practical devices, each pixel contains thousands of nano pointed electron emitters (made of molybdenum or silicon materials with a radius less than 1 nanometer), and effective electron emission is obtained. In addition, the planar Diamond-like carbon film is also suitable for electron emission instead of nano tip.
The gate voltage of the FED device is 50 volts, the dielectric thickness separating the gate and cathode is 1 nanometer, and the distance between the cathode and anode is 200 nanometers. Its advantages are: wide viewing angle, vertical and horizontal directions greater than 160 degrees; Low power consumption, belongs to excitation light-emitting device, does not need backlight; Ultra light and thin, with a wide operating temperature range.
Compared to active matrix LCDs, FEDs have higher brightness and contrast. For active matrix LCDs, as long as a thin film transistor fails, it will cause a pixel at that location to permanently light or dark. And because FEDs contain thousands of emitters per pixel, even if 20% of them fail, they will not suffer a loss of brightness.
In addition, FED display is similar to CRT in that it does not require any auxiliary light source. By controlling the gate voltage, the grayscale level of the image can be effectively adjusted. By increasing the density of the field emitter and increasing the scanning frequency, the high-resolution of CRT can be achieved.
Recently, Ise Electronics Industry in Japan developed a 40 inch color FED panel using a carbon nanotube cathode, and IBM in the United States also developed a carbon nanotube FED. Compared with current silicon FEDs, the current driving performance index of carbon nanotube FEDs - transconductance - has been increased by about twice (transconductance is the ratio of drain current to gate voltage, and the larger the value, the higher the operating speed).
Toshiba Corporation of Japan also stated that it will launch a new generation of wall mounted television screens using field emission display technology in March 2004. The screen size is about 30 inches, with a thickness of 2 centimeters, and its image quality is comparable to traditional cathode ray televisions. Toshiba also plans to sell advanced field emission flat panel displays at prices lower than LCD displays.
