The battery life is crucial in portable applications. If LED drivers are practical, they must have high efficiency. The efficiency measurement of LED drivers is different from that of typical power sources. The definition of a typical power efficiency measurement is output power divided by input power. For LED drivers, output power is not a relevant parameter. The important thing is the input power value required to generate the expected LED brightness. This can be simply determined by dividing the LED power by the input power.
Please note that if efficiency is defined in this way, the power consumption in the current detection resistor will cause power dissipation in the power supply. We can see that a smaller current sensing voltage will generate higher efficiency LED drivers. The efficiency improvement of using a 0.25V reference voltage power supply compared to using a 1V reference voltage power supply. A lower current sensing voltage power supply is more effective, regardless of input voltage or LED current. As long as other conditions are the same, a lower reference voltage can improve efficiency and extend the service life of the battery.
