Electroluminescence refers to the emission of fluorescence when Zinc sulfide or other materials are energized. The phenomenon of powder electroluminescence was discovered in 1937, but it was not actually applied until 1981, when thin film electroluminescent plates were developed by depositing fluorescent materials onto glass substrates. This type of display has high contrast and has been applied in fields such as space shuttles and industrial control.
Electroluminescent displays can be divided into thin film electroluminescent (TFEL) displays represented by Planar Company and thick film Electroluminescent display represented by Canadian iFire Company according to process. The central layer is a thin film phosphor, which emits light when a strong enough electric field is applied. The two sides of the fluorescent body are insulated layers, and the top and bottom electrodes form the basic capacitive structure. At least one of the electrodes must be transparent in order to see the emission of light.
It is said that monochromatic active matrix displays using this display technology can have a brightness of up to 1000lpi (lumens per inch) and a resolution of up to VGA (640 × 480) or XGA (1280 × 1024). At present, the resolution of color active matrix Electroluminescent display is VGA level.
